ROCKVILLE - A financially struggling day care for children from low-income families will stay open for at least one more month, thanks to one local woman who arrived today with a gift. Megan Bocanegra, the director of compliance at The Potter's House, received a phone call this morning from a person who asked for the day care's address, Bocanegra said this afternoon. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, came to The Potter's House at 74 Brooklyn St. and handed Bocanegra a blank envelope. The woman hugged everyone in the room and told the staff, "We're a caring family and we wanted to care for your family," Bocanegra said.
When Bocanegra opened the envelope, she found a bank check for $20,000, marked from "A Caring Family." "I'm speechless," Bocanegra said. "What do you say to someone who walks in and gives you 20 grand?" Executive Director Leslie Suarez said she received a call the night before from the woman, who watched coverage of The Potter's House on local television. "She was moved by the type of service provided by us," Suarez said.
During the last two days, the day care has collected $24,000 in donations and pledges. The money will sustain The Potter's House for at least the next month, but more money is needed in the long term, both Bocanegra and Suarez said.
